An Introduction to the Food Handlers Test

The Food Handlers test, also known as the Food Handler Certification Exam is required by employers across Canada to verify your knowledge of food safety. It's the final step in the Userve Food Handler Certification course, which is designed to help you understand the legal and practical responsibilities of working safely with food.

The course is entirely online and includes interactive lessons, quizzes and study materials. Exam sessions are proctored (monitored) via webcam to ensure integrity.

Once you've completed the learning modules, you'll be prompted to take the test.

How Many Questions Are on the Food Handlers Test? 

The test includes 50 multiple-choice questions that assess your understanding of the material. You have 60 minutes to complete the exam.

What Score Do You Need to Pass the Food Handlers Test?

You’ll need a score of 70% or higher to pass the Food Handlers test. 

If you don’t pass on your first attempt, don’t worry. The course includes unlimited retakes, so you have the opportunity to review the material and try again as many times as you need to during your 30-day course access period.

What Happens After I Pass the Food Handlers Test?

After completing the test and achieving a passing score:

  • You’ll receive your Food Handler Certificate within one hour via email
  • You can download, print or share your certificate with your employer

Your certificate is valid for five years across all Canadian provinces and territories (except Manitoba) and is essential for anyone working in kitchens, cafes, restaurants, catering services and other food service settings.
